An overview of Tactical Urbanism
Density Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Parks & Public Space Smart CitiesSummary
“Tactical Urbanism,” a term that is commonly used amongst urban planners, yet there are no exact representations of tactical urbanism. The term itself is very broad, and the results are a form of temporary urbanism to which the definition is ever changing throughout every urban sector of the world. From adding traffic cones to provide better traffic routes to making crosswalks more vibrant so it can portray a school is nearby or even adding lanterns for a more safe environment are all examples of tactical urbanism. Anthony Garcia and Mike Lydon define it as an approach to neighborhood building and activation using short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions and policies.
As the population within urban cities increases, a strong understanding of managing spaces can improve or deteriorate quality of life for those individuals living in urban centres. Thus, tactical urbanism allows experimentation from the public which provides a better understanding of the socio-cultural interactions in urban spaces.
