Homeless woman charged for building her own home
Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Economic Development HousingSummary
Darlene Necan, a First Nations woman, attempted to build a cabin in the area where she grew up. Necan was charged with fines up to $10,000 through the Public Lands Act by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Other community members do not understand why the Ministry is concerned regarding Necan’s house, as it is common for First Nations people to build their own home without title to the land. When asked about if the land has become Crown land or is still under the treaty, neither the Ministry and Chief of the reserve have provided a response according to CBC News.
