Summary

Svalbard, an island in the Arctic, is home to the Global Seed Vault. The Vault has been built underground inside a permafrost mountain and has the capacity to hold over 2.5 billion types of seeds. The idea behind the vault is that it allows the safe storage of seeds from all over the world, if a seed is at risk of going extinct, the vault can act as a backup and reintroduce the seeds where they are needed. It is not just seeds that are stored however, thousands of varieties of crops such as rice or barley also call the vault home. Having access to a wide variety of seeds and crops is crucial to continue to feed our planet's ever growing population. The Global Seed Vault ensures that no matter how many seeds are lost, somewhere there are the reserves to allow society to begin growing again.
