Summary

Stephen Lawrence was a young black man from England who was murdered on the 22nd of April 1993. Dubbed “A Murder that changed a Nation” Stephen was killed in an unprovoked, racially motivated, attack near a southeast London bus stop by five white males. In addition to the horrific murder, the case is well known for the ineptitude of the police inquiry that followed, heaping more misery on the Lawrence family. Their struggles to achieve justice for their son and convict the killers would go on for decades. An inquiry into the event and investigation in 1999 concluded that the Metropolitan Police Service was “institutionally racist” and gave recommendations to right the wrongs that had come to light over the case. Eventually, in 2012, over 19 years after the murder, two of the men were found guilty and imprisoned after new forensic technology promoted a review of the case. The UK government introduced changes in law following the inquiry and continues to reform the Metropolitan Police to this day. However, many minorities in the UK still feel that not enough has been done. See the video below to learn more.
