How Soil Could Be An Untapped Source Of Electricity- CNBC
Climate Change, Energy & Pollution VideoSummary
Bioo, a battery company from Barcelona, is using soil to generate electricity. It hopes to reduce the reliance that we have on single-use chemical batteries through its reactor that can be placed in the ground. Instead of lithium, a chemical often used in traditional batteries, Bioo uses microorganisms that feed off organic matter in soil. This constant breakdown results in the release of electrons which power the device. Bioo hopes that its device will have major applications in the agricultural industry. Soil-powered smart sensors that monitor crops remotely will become cheaper and easier to run if farmers can harness this technology. However, the devices are not yet commercially available and from a power generation perspective still lag behind traditional batteries so don’t expect soil power to enter your home just yet. But Bioo hopes that in the next few years farmers will be just the beginning of a major electricity shift in society.
