Interactive: How AI will affect American cities

Economic Development Smart Cities

Summary

As the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) increases, larger cities will see larger impacts. Large urban areas that have a large concentration of workers in high tech and white-collar industries are seen as the readiest for AI. These cities include San Jose, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and the Boston-Washington DC corridor. There is a large overlap between AI patents and manufacturing jobs. This results in states such as Indiana, Kentucky and Alabama being ranked in the high exposure categories. Further, large agricultural centres and manufacturing centres are also at high AI exposure. Areas with high concentrations of workers in retail, mining, transportation, agriculture, food services and accommodation are exposed to the automation of jobs. However, these areas do not face the same threat of AI as places with more technology-based jobs are more exposed to AI. This difference is illustrated by the state of Nevada, having a large amount of accommodation and food services jobs, the state is at high exposure to automation and low exposure to AI.
