Ruelles Vertes: harnessing alleys for mental health breaks in Montreal
Parks & Public SpaceSummary
This article aims to address the important connection between green space and mental health and to bring to light an initiative applied in Montreal called Ruelles Vertes. This initiative, called Green Alleys in English, started out in the 1960s as a residential movement in Montreal and now has even received support by local government. Its purpose is to expand the area of greenspace in the city while revitalizing communities. The reason why this initiative is so important is because it has helped transform areas that were once undesirable into important components that make up the urban environment. To turn alleyway’s into Ruelle Vertes, residents within certain areas of the city can apply to their local government where they are then provided with knowledge and resources to add gardens and art into their neighbourhoods. Ruelle Vertes also work to alleviate a problem common in many urban environments also known as the heat island phenomenon. These spaces have further improved public life as they are often used to host activities and events during the summer months. Besides these benefits, and going back to the main point, Ruelle Vertes have become shared spaces while fostering a sense of community that has in turn supported mental health and wellbeing of Montreal residents.
