Farm to Doorstep: Why 'Agrihoods' Are the Next Big Trend in Real Estate
Food Security HousingSummary
Millennials and Generation Z place importance on accessing agriculture, which can be seen in “agrihoods.” Urban Land Institute (ULI) defines agrihoods as “single-family, multi-family or mixed use communities built with a working farm as a focus.” An agrihood is a neighbourhood where families can access agriculture with ease. Serenbe is a 1000 acre agrihood in Atlanta, Georgia where hundreds of houses are right next to a 25-acre organic farm, cultivated by professional farmers. An agrihood, Miralon, will open in Palm Springs in the Coachella Valley. Homes will have solar panels and start at prices in the high $300,000s to the mid $700,000s. An 18-hole golf course has been repurposed into a community garden where olive groves will also be harvested by the Temecula Olive Oil Company. A luxury agrihood, Walden Monterey, will be located on the Monterey Peninsula in California. The 600-acre property will have 22 plots with houses priced around $5 million. There will be a communal farm in addition to a sunrise yoga platform and Zen meditation gardens. In an agrihood, having a farm or olive groove is an asset that makes the community worth more. This compensates developers for not filling the open space with houses. Agrihoods could be the bridge between developers, environmentalists and the new generation of homebuyers.
