Grandma's in the backyard kids! Granny Pods are becoming a thing
HousingSummary
MEDCottage, based in Virginia, has created “granny pods” which are 12 feet by 24 feet pods that can be placed in backyards and connect to the main house’s plumbing and electrical system. The pods vary in style, size and prices from $85 000 to $ 125 000. The pods have a cottage feel and the padded floors are supportive of those with arthritis. In addition, a lift can be attached to a ceiling track so the caregiver could move with a patient freely. The kitchens have appliances, as well as a medicine dispenser that is timed. Bathrooms are comfortable and spacious. Additional features could be a virtual companion to relay messages, extra lighting at knee level for more illumination, and a ventilation system to combat airborne pathogens for someone with a weaker immune system. This pod is a modern alternative to a nursing home.
