Dorms for Grownups: A solution for Lonely Millennials?

Housing

Summary

Commonspace is created by CoWorks founders Troy Evans and John Talarico, who are creating 300-square-feet micro-units that each have a kitchen, bathroom, and a bedroom, two floors above the co-working space. The micro-units will also be surrounded by a chef’s kitchen, TV and game room. A “social engineer” will ensure group harmony among roommates while facilitating social events. Commonspace appeals to millennials who want to have privacy but also want to socialize and make friends. The micro-units are slightly cheaper than other apartments at $700 to $900 a month. Other co-living spaces exist such as the “Millennial Commune”, an apartment building where its residents can network and have a social community and “Krash” which allows entrepreneurs to live for 3 to 12 months in a shared living space. Commonspace, however, is a shared living space with micro units. It promotes doing activities as a group and being social, rather than feeling lonely where one is living. There are measures that will be taken to avoid disputes among the residents and the micro-units themselves provide privacy to those who want it. Co-working results in people who are able to increase their business because of connections and be happier and less lonely so co-living could produce a similar effect.
